The Witch of Fife - Bowhill, Selkirk (Musical Theatre Production by Smeddum)

A performance of James Hogg's epic poem with music written & performed by Smeddum:
Elspeth Smellie
Shona Mooney
Amy Thatcher
Alan Caig-Wilson

“Where have ye been, ye ill woman,
These three Lang nichts frae hame?
What gars the sweat drap frae yer brow,
Like clots o' the saut sea-faem?”

“Sit doon, sit doon, my leal auld man,
Sit doon and listen tae me;
I'll gar the hair stand on yer crown,
And a cauld sweat blin' yer e'e!”

The Witch of Fife is an off-kilter piece of musical theatre with specially composed music & song, spoken word & clog dancing. The story is of a woman/witch cocking a snook at her would-be dominant husband who ignores her advice & suffers the consequences – a moral in there to all husbands!

Elspeth Smellie: Borders based Scottish harpist
Elspeth Smellie has been playing, singing & composing
for the Scottish harp for more years than she cares to
remember! Her music & song is a natural fusion of different
genres mainly inspired by the Scottish Borders landscape,
history & people. Elspeth teaches harp, while writing &
performing for a myriad of events including theatre, TV
& radio, concerts, private performances & weddings.

Shona Mooney: Fiddler Shona Mooney is a Borders
lass brought up in Lauder. She sources traditional tunes from the Borders region while her own compositions derive inspiration from a wide range of subjects, both human & pastoral. Shona has just been awarded (along with Amy Thatcher) the best screening with a small ensemble in the Silent London Poll of 2015 for the 1927 silent film Annie Laurie.

Amy Thatcher: Amy is a professional accordionist (& clog
dancer!) based in the North East of England. Her reputation
as one of the UK's leading folk accordionists is garnered from
working with legends such as Kathryn Tickell & Sting. Amy is
also involved in creating experimental music with the electric
folk quintet 'Monster Ceilidh Sound System' & the all female Scottish supergroup 'The Shee' of which Shona Mooney is also a member.

Alan Caig-Wilson: Alan is a performer & director, originally
from Selkirk who has made theatre in Scotland, England, Japan,
India, Finland, Austria & the US. As a singer his voice appeared
on stage, as well as in film & TV scores. This is his fourth musical theatre collaboration with Elspeth Smellie & Shona Mooney.
